Musk suggests fresh political party following break with Trump

(MENAFN) Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced plans to form a new political organization called the “America Party” following a dramatic break with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The billionaire, once a staunch Trump supporter, had previously donated over $260 million to pro-Trump causes and was appointed in January to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-created agency aimed at streamlining federal bureaucracy.

This week, Musk launched a poll on his platform X (formerly Twitter), asking his 220 million followers whether it was time to establish a centrist political party to represent the “80% in the middle.” The poll attracted more than 5.6 million responses, with roughly 80% voting in favor. Musk declared the results a mandate, saying, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America,” and suggested the name “America Party.”

The fallout with Trump intensified after Musk harshly criticized the president’s $2.4 trillion tax and spending bill, branding it a “disgusting abomination.” Trump hit back by threatening to revoke federal contracts awarded to Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.

The conflict escalated on social media, with Musk accusing Trump of links to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk also called for Trump’s impeachment.

Amid the political drama, speculation emerged over Musk’s potential political realignment. Some Democratic lawmakers see the split as an opening, while others, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, dismissed the feud as inevitable. “Those two giant egos were never going to stay aligned,” she said.

The dispute also shook financial markets—Tesla stock fell 14%, while shares of Trump Media dropped 8% before partially rebounding.

In a lighthearted comment, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev offered to broker a truce. “We are ready to mediate a peace deal between D and E for a fair fee — Starlink shares accepted,” he joked on X.
