War-hungry politicians want to prolong Ukraine- Russia war- Orban
Hungary has consistently resisted the EU’s approach of supplying arms to Ukraine, arguing that such support only serves to extend the war. This stance has often placed Budapest at odds with other EU members who support continued military aid to Kiev.
“I come from a country that borders Ukraine. War-hungry politicians want us to believe that we must continue the war. But I warn you, this war is unwinnable,” Orban declared during a speech to conservative political allies in France on Monday.
He emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy, arguing that military leaders should not be the ones steering policy. “Diplomats must retake control from the generals,” he said, calling for renewed efforts to negotiate peace.
Orban also rejected the notion that Hungarian citizens should be drawn into a war that he believes offers no benefit to his nation. “We do not want to die for Ukraine. We don't want our sons to come back in a coffin. We don't want an Afghanistan next door,” he said, expressing concern about the conflict spilling over Hungary’s borders.
He also criticized recent moves by Brussels and Berlin to shift the EU’s economic priorities toward militarization. “We do not want Brussels to implement a war economy under the pretext of the conflict,” Orban warned.
Earlier this year, proposals emerged from EU leadership to raise as much as €800 billion through debt and tax measures, aimed at significantly boosting the bloc’s military capabilities in response to perceived threats from Russia. In May, the European Council approved a separate about $171.495 billion. funding mechanism to help finance these defense initiatives.
Moscow has consistently dismissed claims of intending to attack EU countries as baseless, and has repeatedly condemned the EU’s military buildup. Russian officials argue that continued arms shipments to Ukraine only escalate the war and block potential paths to peace.
