Six US States Hold Primary Elections Ahead of November Vote

(MENAFN) Voters in six US states cast ballots in primary elections on Tuesday, setting the stage for November’s general election contests, with particular attention focused on California’s race to choose a successor to Gov. Gavin Newsom.

California’s primary system places all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, on a single ballot, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the general election. Nearly 60 candidates entered the race to replace the term-limited governor.

As vote counting continued early Wednesday, Republican Steve Hilton led the field with 27.8% of the vote, followed by Xavier Becerra with 25.4%. However, with only 58% of ballots counted, the final outcome remained uncertain.

According to reports, election analysts noted that California often sees significant vote updates after election day as mail-in and drop-off ballots continue to be processed, meaning the lineup for the general election had not yet been officially determined.

In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass secured enough support to advance to the November contest. The incumbent Democrat was leading the race with 34.8% of the vote, and according to reports, her place in the general election had already been confirmed.

The contest for the second runoff spot remained unresolved. Republican candidate Spencer Pratt, who received backing from President Donald Trump, held 30.4% of the vote, while Nithya Raman followed with 22.3%, with approximately 63% of ballots counted.

The results marked an important step in shaping several major races that will be decided during the November elections.
