Attorney General Alan Wilson declares victory over challenge to South Carolina election integrity law

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced a major legal victory yesterday as a U.S. district court granted a motion to dismiss a challenge to an election integrity law in South Carolina, ruling the plaintiffs had no legal basis to sue.

 

“This ruling is a win for election integrity in South Carolina,” Attorney General Wilson stated. “Citizens must have confidence that ballots are cast without interference in free and fair elections.”

 

Election law in South Carolina specifies which voters are eligible for voting assistance, who may request an application to vote by absentee ballot, and the number of absentee ballots a person may request or return during an election cycle.

 

The NAACP and several individual plaintiffs sued to challenge South Carolina’s voter assistance law, arguing that it prevents citizens from receiving assistance from a person of their own choosing.

 

Wilson added: “This is an encouraging reminder that the judicial system addresses real injuries, not speculation. I’ll continue to defend South Carolina law, especially those that secure our elections.”
