New Mexico Secretary of State Hosts Regional Cross Jurisdictional Election Security Exercises Across New Mexico
County Clerks trained with New Mexico Secretary of State staff, as well as county IT staff, emergency managers, law enforcement and first responders ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office joined the Election Security Exchange in hosting five regional election security exercises this fall to help county election offices prepare for the Nov. 3 general election.
The exercises focused on realistic emergency planning, and participants collaborated on appropriate responses to each stage of emergency scenarios. The events’ discussions covered cybersecurity, physical security and election operations.
“New Mexico’s election administrators always prepare for the unexpected in the days ahead of an election. These exercises let them work through an emergency with their local partners in the room, so they know who to call and what those partners will do,” said Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver. “Developing these connections early-on plays a critical role in running elections that are safe, secure, and accessible for every eligible voter in this state.”
The workshops brought together County Clerks, their election staff and critical emergency contacts including representatives from the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security, New Mexico Department of Emergency Management, Secretary of State’s Office, county IT staff, county emergency management, local law enforcement and local first responders. In all, representatives from 21 of the state’s 33 counties attended.
“The clerks asked tough questions about their own plans, and afterwards felt more equipped and supported by the state, local law enforcement, first responders and their IT professionals,” said Andrea Byrne, interim executive director of the Election Security Exchange. “We were happy to help the Secretary’s office put these together.”
