China Seeks Constructive Strategic Ties with US Following Election Results

(MENAFN) China on Wednesday expressed its readiness to develop a "constructive strategic relationship" with the United States as Democrats moved toward taking control of Congress following the midterm elections, which dealt a significant setback to President Donald Trump.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning characterized the vote as a "domestic" US matter, while reaffirming Beijing's willingness to continue engaging with Washington and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

"China is willing to work with the US to safeguard and implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication, properly manage differences and expand cooperation, build a constructive strategic relationship based on respect and equality," Mao told reporters in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump had previously agreed at meetings in May and September to work toward a "constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity."

Meanwhile, US media projected that Democrats would secure 53 seats in the Senate, compared with 42 for Republicans, as vote counting continued in the remaining contests.

Democrats were also expected to obtain at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, reaching the majority threshold in the chamber, which has 435 members.

The election results come ahead of an anticipated meeting between Xi and Trump later this month in Shenzhen, southern China. The two leaders are expected to hold their summit alongside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
